My name is Jon Grall, and I specialize in adventure photography, and shoot commercial projects on location for outdoor brands.
My journey towards becoming a photographer has been anything but typical – I didn’t go to school for it, and I built a promising career doing something completely different. I grew up in England and France, before moving to the U.S. in 2001 to pursue a Computer Science degree at MIT. After college I spent 10 years living and working in California – much of it in Silicon Valley. My first career was spent designing and building games and apps, using software to try to improve the everyday lives of millions of people – something I’ve been lucky enough to do three times at Microsoft, Dropbox, and later my own startups.
While I found some measure of success working in technology, in 2015 I found myself looking in new directions, having achieved most of the career goals that I had set for myself. I also realized that I wanted more from my work life than sitting at a computer all day. I wanted to indulge my artistic sensibilities, get outdoors, and travel more. Now that I’m taking my career in a different direction, my background in engineering and video game production has helped me to get a headstart in photography.
